Some recommended animated film texts.

I thought I'd release a list of films that people might find interesting for different animation aesthetics and for comparison of narrative style, in some cases.

Anime:

Perfect Blue
Ghost in the Shell
Akira
Spirited Away Directed by Hiyao Miyazaki
Princess Mononoke Directed by Hiyao Miyazaki
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds [Worth comparing to a film called 'Warriors of the Wind' from the early 80's. 'Nausicaa' was also directed by Miyazaki, but initially released by Disney and recut/redubbed into almost an entirely different film. The original has been rereleased on DVD]

Disney Variants:

Lilo & Stitch
The Emperor's New Groove
[Examples of the now-defunct 2D animation division which has been canned despite the fact that these were two of the best Disney films in some time.]

Titan A.E. [FOX rather than Disney, but very Disney-esque aesthetic.]
The Iron Giant [Warner Bros rather than Disney. More challenging film than most Disney products, but again a similar look in places.]

Avant-garde Animation:

Waking Life [Actors with animated caricatures superimposed on them.]

There are more if you need them, but that should get you started.

some other Studio Ghibli ones:

Howls Moving Castle
Grave Of The Fireflies
Kiki's Delivery Service
Porco Rosso
My Neighbor Totoro
The Castle Of Cagliostro
Laputa: Castle in the Sky

Miyazaki is god :p Not many other directors have 8 movies above an 8.0 rating on the IMDB.

I still prefer anime over the stuff that pixar and disney are bringing out but even ghibli are merging their traditional animation aesthetic with new 3d technology, didn't think it worked that well in Ghost In The Shell 2 but that could just be me :) I would hate to see japanime's distinct style dissapear under the new cgi movies that have been doing so well lately.
